29th MOSCOW INTERNATIONAL OPTICAL FAIR (MIOF)

The 29th Moscow International Optical Fair (MIOF), a significant business event for the optical industry of Russia, was held September 14 through 16 at Crocus Expo.

To date MIOF is considered to be the largest national platform and meeting place for the leading distributors of global brands of medical optics and ophthalmology with representatives of wholesale and retail trade. The exhibition provides an opportunity to come to learn about the latest trends and innovations of the industry, make a balanced decision on procurement, establish new business contacts and conclude mutually beneficial agreements. MIOF is more than ever the key moment of the year for the eyewear and optics world. It is also the place where the brands and the opticians meet tomorrow's business and their future success.

EXHIBITORS

Suppliers and manufacturers of medical optics and equipment products from all over Russia and foreign countries (Armenia, Canada, China, and the Republic of Belarus) presented modern developments and new optical products: glasses, lenses, professional equipment, software for optics salons and much more. Markisa Project, Optic Dias, Megapolis, New Optica, Balero-MC, Stofmoff and New Line were among the exhibitors.

BUSINESS PROGRAM

Dedicated and dense business program was traditionally held alongside with the exposition. The specialists obtained new knowledge on a wide range of thematic sections when attending the calendar of events. The sciences of vision have progressed a lot in recent years thanks to the numerous research works and innovations made in the materials. This new knowledge has led to significant changes in the methods of correcting vision defects, prescriptions and the development of equipment.

BUSINESS FORUM

Representatives of ArtOptics held a seminar within the frames of the Business forum where they talked about the use of Perifocal lenses in optometric practice, including their optical and functional advantages in comparison with multisegment lenses.

Another seminar was organized by the manufacturer of contact lenses SkyOptix laboratory. Issues related to the diversity of orthokeratology types; integration of orthokeratology into existing business; commercialization of the orthokeratology business using digital tools were considered within the frames of the seminar.

The seminar held by Yakutina E. N., trainer of the International Business School Strategist, General Director Market Assistance Group, became of special interest for the attendees. The speaker told about an optical enterprise growth strategy and what first steps should be undertaken by an optician to start business. Besides the forum hosted the presentation of the new book by E. N. Yakutina Optical Enterprise Marketing hot off the press.

V SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE ON CHILDREN'S OPHTHALMOLOGY AND OPTOMETRY KIDS VISION

The anniversary V scientific conference on children's ophthalmology and optometry KIDS VISION was held within the frames of the fair. The interim results of the summer charity action Glasses for Children with Rare Genetic Diseases which formed the integral part of the Kids Vision project were announced at the conference.

The action took place June 1 to August 15, 2021. During the three summer months, children with genetic diseases aniridia, albinism and achromatopsia received new corrective and sunglasses as a gift. In total, over the summer, the philanthropists managed to help 177 children, and another 27 will receive help in October.

Optics Gallery, Optics City, Akademoptika, МОК-the exclusive distributor of spectacle lenses of the French manufacturer BBGR, Russian division of the international optical company Opticus, Key Optical Russia, Leglama, Medstar NPF; and new partners - Mondottica, Eyelevel, New Line and Rodenstock Rus rendered support to the project.

The co-organizer of the action was MOO MCP Raduzhka with the participation of the Aniridia Center of the Pediatric Department of the Central Research Bureau of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The partners of the charitable foundation Kids Vision are Crocus Expo and Market Assistant Group.

The program of the V scientific conference Kids Vision featured a number of various educational and scientific events for the professionals of the optical industry.

Among the topics that were considered at the conference, the problem of myopia occupied a predominant place. U.V. Diadina, ophthalmologist, PhD in medicine, director of educational programs Hoya Lens Rus, introduced an innovative myopia controlling method with Hoya MiYOSMART spectacle lenses. M. A. Trubilina, PhD in medicine, Director General of the Professor Trubilin’s Family Ophthalmology Clinic, highlighted in her lecture the practical experience of using the innovative myopia controlling method - MiYOSMART spectacle lenses.

Besides the section Rare Eye Diseases and Poor Vision with participation of outstanding scientists and practitioners was organized within the frames of the project. Poor vision area offers opticians and other professionals the opportunity to improve their knowledge of this topic, along with practical and useful information to help tackle one of today’s major health problems. In particular, S. E. Kondratova, ophthalmologist, researcher at the Research Institute of Pediatrics and Child Health of the Central Clinical Hospital of the Russian Academy of Sciences, chief physician of the Center for Optical Correction of Vision Academoptics, spoke at the conference.

Issues of screening binocular disorders, the use of scleral lenses and accreditation of optometrists were discussed at the Kids Vision conference. N.V. Rinskaya, master of optometry, specialist in binocular disorders, author of the Optometrists’ Handbook, spoke about screening binocular disorders.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

A new project Kindness Glasses, organized in joint efforts with the Kids Vision charitable foundation, was for the first time held within MIOF frames. The organizers arranged the collection of glasses to be handed over to poor people or those who were in a difficult life situation. Any visitor could bring second hand no longer used glasses to the exhibition and donate them and representatives of optical salons could take illiquid goods from their stocks, bring them to the exhibition and put in a special container. The charitable foundation Kids Vision NPO handed over the collected during the action glasses directly to official associations of patients with vision diseases, optics stores and medical clinics through which glasses would be distributed among patients.

It was also announced about the commence of applications acceptance for the national tender on participation in the contest for the Russian National Award Golden Lorgnette 2021 in the optical industry for achievements in the field of new technologies promotion, sight protection and professional service of the population, which would be culminated by the Awarding Ceremony within the spring edition of the trade fair. Deadline for applications is November 01, 2020. The application can be submitted in the personal account at the award website.

VISITORS

A wide professional audience attended MIOF trade fair: owners and managers of optical chains and salons; marketers, heads of sales and promotion departments of optical salons; buyers and specialists responsible for the formation of the assortment; ophthalmologists and optometrists.

The number of specialists - representatives of wholesale and retail companies, owners of optical products trading platforms, ophthalmologists who visited the 29th Moscow International Optical Fair- amounted to more than 3,000 people.

The total number of attendees at the Kids Vision conference and Business forum exceeded 500 people. Among them, about 10% of newcomers, are those who decided to start up a new business by opening their own optics stores. Thus, MIOF has become for them a guide to the world of the optical industry.

The attractiveness of MIOF is reinforced with each edition. Year after year, the event federates an increasing number of professionals of the optical and eyewear industry around the same objective: to explore the future of a profession that is undergoing profound changes.

The 30th Moscow International Optical Fair will be held in February 2022.
